Cursor lets cloud agents start without a repo

2026-08-29 · cursor

Cursor has shipped a simpler entry point for Cloud Agents: start from scratch, prompt the agent immediately, and only turn the result into a repo once the project is worth keeping. That removes one of the bigger setup frictions in browser-based agent workflows. The update also folds in live browser previews and one-click publishing, making the flow feel more like idea-to-app scaffolding than traditional repo-first development. It is a notable shift toward agent-native prototyping inside Cursor’s hosted environment.

Key Features or Updates

Cloud Agents no longer require a connected third-party SCM provider to begin work. Cursor now creates an Origin repo in the background when needed, supports live browser previews through port forwarding, and adds a publish path for turning a generated project into a shareable live URL.

Impact on Developers

This lowers the cost of trying an idea, especially for experiments that may not deserve a permanent repository yet. It also makes hosted coding agents more accessible to nontraditional builders, while still giving experienced developers a path to formalize and version the result later.

How to use it

In Cursor’s repo picker, choose Start from scratch and prompt the cloud agent directly. Once the generated app looks useful, create the repo, set its name and visibility, then continue iterating from the new Origin-backed project.
