Google backs Agent Plugins 1.0

2026-08-08 · antigravity

Google’s Antigravity team announced support for Agent Plugins 1.0.0, a vendor-neutral format for bundling Agent Skills and MCP servers into a single portable directory. Google is joining the core maintainer group and says support is rolling into its own products, including Agents CLI and the Data Agent Kit. The announcement matters because it addresses one of the messiest parts of agent tooling today: every client inventing a different wrapper and manifest around otherwise portable skills and tools.

Key Features or Updates

Agent Plugins defines a fixed directory layout with a lightweight `plugin.json`, optional `skills/`, and `mcp.json` for tool servers. The spec is intentionally narrow: it standardizes packaging and discovery while leaving installation, permissions, and UX decisions to individual clients.

Impact on Developers

For plugin and skill authors, the main payoff is less duplicated packaging work across different agent ecosystems. A portable plugin box means reusable skills and MCP servers can travel more cleanly between clients without per-platform wrappers drifting out of sync.

How to use it

Developers can package skills under `skills/`, declare MCP servers in `mcp.json`, and publish a minimal `plugin.json` manifest that points to the shared schema. If you already ship skills or tool servers to multiple agent clients, this is the standard to watch for reducing packaging friction.
