AI Agent Stuck in a Fix-Break-Revert Loop? Break the Cycle

The problem

You ask your AI coding agent to fix a bug. It fixes it—but the fix breaks something else. You point out the new bug. The agent “fixes” it by reverting your original fix. Now you’re back where you started, minus the credits and the time.

This fix-break-revert loop went viral in March 2026 when a developer shared their automated pipeline experience on dev.to: the agent received the same feedback four times in a row, oscillating between two conflicting fixes because the spec had contradictory sections. The agents were “doing exactly what they were told”—the problem was that nobody checked the instructions for contradictions first.

Why agents loop

The root cause is contradictory constraints accumulating in the context window. Here’s the cycle:

  1. The agent applies Fix A to resolve Bug 1.
  2. Fix A introduces Bug 2 (because the agent didn’t account for a side effect).
  3. You report Bug 2. The context window now contains: the original bug, Fix A, and Bug 2.
  4. The agent applies Fix B to resolve Bug 2—but Fix B conflicts with Fix A, so Bug 1 reappears.
  5. The context window now holds all prior attempts. The model oscillates because every “solution” violates a constraint left by a previous attempt.
